Frequently Asked Clutch Questions

IRP Triple Grip 3-disc clutch for 50cc motocross bikes

How do I adjust a Triple Grip Clutch?

On the bottom of a Triple Grip are 5 Allen key screws. You wind these in to increase the stall speed and wind them out to reduce it.

If your bike is on small wheels with a stock engine the Triple Grip should work right out of the box.

If your bike is newer than 2024, on big wheels or has a tuned engine you may need to adjust the stall speed.

To do this measure from the silver RETAINER to the clutch base using verniers. Start at 6mm and test. If the clutch still doesn't perform the best go in to 5.9mm.

Most bikes using big wheels or a tuned engine work best between 5.7mm and 6mm.

How do I adjust a Quad Grip Clutch?

Quad Grip Clutches were released in February 2024 to work with the slightly faster 24 and newer bikes as well as tuned or modded bikes.

Most Quad Grips will work directly out of the box regardless on engine tuning and if you are using big wheels.

Quad Grips are adjusted in the same way as a Triple Grip, via 5 Allen key screws on the bottom although screw and retainer height is different from a Triple Grip.

If you do need to adjust the stall speed start at 7mm from the SCREW HEAD (not the retainer) and test. If a Quad Grip needs adjusted it will usually work best between 6.8mm and 7.1mm.

These settings are using the springs that are in the clutch. Not many engine builds require the use of the golden springs.

How do I know if my clutch needs rebuilt?

There will be obvious signs of a clutch needing a rebuild. The clutch will slip and the performance will deteriorate.

If you want to keep a check on your plates and floaters then plates should always measure above 2.41mm on the carbon fibre. The steel floaters should be 1.166mm and the air gap (measured under the bottom plate) should always be below 1.5mm. The feeler gauge should also slide in without lifting any of the plates.

Oil is also a good measuring stick as to how well your clutch is performing. Oil should come out "roughly" the same colour that it went in. If the oil is black or burnt then your clutch may have overheated and will need checked over.

What type and how much oil should I use?

Always put in 375ml of oil with a standard casing. This is so that if the rider has a fall or the bike is dropped then the clutch will always have enough oil to keep it covered.

CTFR (TwoToCool) is the best oil available in the UK. However, since it is hard to get, any quality (eg: Motorex) Dexron III oil is sufficient.

Do not use cheap oils from auto parts stores as these can reduce the life of the clutch.

Make sure and change oil frequently (we recommend every 2 hours maximum) or sooner if conditions are very wet or deep.
